The Cleanest Glass Balustrade System

Frameless glass balustrades deliver the most open and contemporary look of any balustrade system. With no posts, no handrail (unless specified), and no visible fixings above floor level, the glass becomes the entire structure — creating a barrier that feels almost invisible while remaining fully compliant with BS6180.

We offer two frameless systems: channel-fixed, where glass panels sit in a continuous aluminium base channel, and spigot-fixed, where panels are held on individual stainless steel spigots. Both can be installed with or without a handrail and are available in straight, L-shape, and U-shape configurations.

Frameless Channel Balustrades

Glass panels are secured in a continuous aluminium base channel that runs flush along the edge of the deck, terrace, or balcony. The channel is the only visible fixture — everything else is glass. The result is the cleanest possible profile, with no posts, no clamps, and a completely uninterrupted view from every angle.

Channel systems are particularly well suited to flat-edged surfaces like poured concrete, composite decking, and flat roof terraces where the channel can be fixed directly to the substrate. Panels can be toughened or laminated to specification, and the system accommodates a stainless steel handrail if required.

  • No visible posts or side fixings
  • Continuous aluminium base channel
  • Toughened or laminated safety glass
  • Available with or without handrail
  • Straight, L-shape, and U-shape configurations
  • Suitable for external terraces, balconies, and flat roofs

Spigot Frameless Balustrades

Spigot systems fix individual stainless steel spigots at intervals along the deck edge, with glass panels clamping into each spigot from above. Because the fixing point is raised off the surface, water can drain freely beneath the glass — making spigots the preferred choice for timber, composite, and porcelain decking.

We also offer core-drilled spigot installation on porcelain and hard stone surfaces using diamond-tipped drill bits, keeping the existing tile surface completely intact with no cracking or surface damage around the fixing point.

  • Individual stainless steel spigot fixings
  • Excellent drainage — ideal for decking
  • Diamond drilling available for porcelain and stone
  • Top-fix and side-fix spigot options
  • Available with or without handrail
  • Completely frameless, open aesthetic

Face-Fixed & Standoff Button Systems

Where floor fixing isn't practical — or where you want the glass fixed to a vertical face rather than the ground — face-mounted systems are the answer. Small stainless steel standoff buttons drill directly into the wall or fascia and pass through pre-drilled holes in the glass panel, holding the glass at a set distance from the surface behind.

The result is a completely frameless appearance with no channel or base rail — the glass appears to float in front of the wall. This is the system most commonly used for Juliet balconies, stairwell landing balustrades, and mezzanine edges where the floor structure cannot take a spigot load.

  • Polished or satin stainless steel standoff buttons
  • No floor penetration — fixes to wall, fascia, or vertical face
  • Completely frameless — no channel, no rail above or below
  • Glass drilled and countersunk to accept fixings — precision work by our own team
  • Common on Juliet balconies, landing balustrades, and mezzanine edges
  • Face mount channel also available where a continuous edge fixing is preferred

Which Glass Thickness Do I Need?

Frameless systems require thicker glass than framed alternatives because the glass carries all the structural load. We specify the correct thickness for every project based on panel size, height, and application.

Channel Systems

Panels must be structural — the glass takes the full lateral load.

  • 12mm toughened — shorter panels, low-exposure sites
  • 15mm toughened — standard residential panels
  • 17.5mm laminated — taller panels or elevated/exposed sites

Spigot Systems

Load is transferred into the spigot fixing — glass thickness varies by panel span.

  • 10mm toughened — shorter panels, close spigot spacing
  • 12mm toughened — standard residential panels
  • 15mm laminated — larger panels or commercial use

Available Shapes & Configurations

Both frameless systems are available in straight, L-shape, and U-shape configurations — all cut to your exact measurements.

Straight run glass balustrade configuration Straight

Single run along one edge — the most common configuration.

L-shape glass balustrade configuration L-Shape

Covers two adjoining sides with a neat mitred or posted corner.

U-shape glass balustrade configuration U-Shape

Wraps around three sides — ideal for decking areas and raised platforms.

Frameless Balustrade FAQs

Both are fully frameless, but the fixing method differs. Channel systems use a continuous aluminium base channel along the floor edge — the glass drops in from above. Spigot systems use individual stainless steel spigots at intervals, with the glass clamped onto each spigot. Spigots are better suited to decking where drainage is needed; channels suit flat roof edges and concrete substrates.
Not always. In many residential applications the glass panels alone meet the required height and load criteria without a handrail. However, for some applications — particularly commercial or higher-level installations — a handrail may be required by Building Control. We advise on this as part of the design process.
Toughened safety glass is approximately four times stronger than standard float glass. Laminated glass adds a further safety benefit — if the panel is ever broken it holds together rather than shattering. All our frameless panels are specified and tested to meet BS6180 load requirements.
Yes. For porcelain tiled surfaces we use specialist diamond-tipped drill bits to core drill spigot fixings through the tile and into the structural substrate beneath, leaving the tile surface completely intact with no cracking. Channel systems can also be fixed to the substrate edge beneath the tile if accessible.
Generally yes — thicker glass, more precise engineering, and more complex installation mean frameless systems carry a higher price. However, the visual impact is significantly greater. For budget-conscious projects our framed post-and-rail systems offer a very cost-effective alternative.
A typical frameless glass balustrade installation takes one to two days on site depending on the size and configuration. We carry out a free site survey beforehand to take all measurements and confirm the fixing method, so there are no delays on installation day.
