Glass Infill with Structural Posts & Handrail

Framed glass balustrade systems combine toughened glass infill panels with stainless steel posts and a continuous handrail. The posts carry the structural load, which means thinner glass can be used and the system is generally more cost-effective than a fully frameless installation — without compromising on the clean, contemporary look.

We offer two framed systems: the classic post-and-rail with full-height stainless posts and a round-tube handrail, and the semi-frameless variant with slimmer, more discreet fittings for a lighter visual profile. Both systems use 42.4mm posts and can be floor-fixed or face-mounted depending on your structure.

Post & Rail Glass Balustrades

The post-and-rail system is the most popular and versatile framed balustrade option. Toughened glass panels are infilled between brushed stainless steel posts, with a matching round-tube handrail running continuously above. Posts can be floor-fixed with base plates or face-mounted to the side of a structure such as a decking frame, staircase string, or concrete edge.

This system works equally well on external decking and patio edges, internal and external staircases, mezzanine floors, and balconies — and is available in a commercial-rated 3.0kN/m specification for offices, retail, hospitality, and public buildings.

Semi-Frameless Glass Balustrades

The semi-frameless system uses the same 42.4mm diameter posts as our standard post-and-rail, set at the same height — giving an equally robust, compliant structure while using slimmer clamp fittings rather than a full top rail. Where there is a drop or fall, posts can be manufactured to achieve a 1,100mm height to meet the required safety standard.

Like all our post-based systems, posts can be floor-fixed or face-mounted to the side of a deck frame, stair string, or other structure. The overall effect is more open and contemporary than a traditional post-and-rail, at a considerably lower cost than a fully frameless channel or spigot system.

  • 42.4mm posts — same as standard post-and-rail
  • Floor-fixed or face-mounted to suit your structure
  • Manufactured to 1,100mm height where a fall is present
  • Glass options: 10mm toughened, 10mm toughened grey, or 11.5mm laminated
  • 11.5mm laminated glass used where installed at height
  • Open, contemporary aesthetic
  • More cost-effective than fully frameless
  • Multiple finishes available

Available in Multiple Finishes

Posts and handrails are available in three standard finishes. We can advise on which works best for your property and application.

Brushed Stainless

The most popular finish — a satin, non-reflective sheen that complements both contemporary and traditional properties. Low maintenance and resistant to fingerprints.

Polished Stainless

A mirror-bright, highly reflective finish that suits modern, high-specification interiors and commercial environments. Pairs well with frameless glass panels.

Powder Coated

Posts and handrails powder coated to any RAL colour — popular choices include Matt Black, Anthracite Grey, and White. Ideal for matching existing joinery or window frames.

Framed Balustrade FAQs

Both use glass infill panels between posts with a top handrail. The main difference is the post profile — standard post-and-rail uses a full-diameter post that is clearly visible, while semi-frameless uses a slimmer, lower post that is much less prominent. Semi-frameless gives a more open look; post-and-rail is typically more cost-effective and better suited to commercial-rated applications.
Both post-and-rail and semi-frameless systems use 10mm toughened glass as standard. A 10mm toughened grey option is also available. Where the balustrade is installed at height — such as on a landing, balcony, or anywhere with a significant drop — we use 11.5mm laminated safety glass, which retains its integrity if broken.
Yes — post-and-rail systems are among the most common staircase balustrade solutions. Posts can be floor-fixed or string-fixed, and the handrail runs at a consistent rake angle following the staircase pitch. We fabricate all components to your exact staircase dimensions.
Yes. Our post-and-rail system is available in a 3.0kN/m commercial-rated specification for use in offices, retail units, hotels, restaurants, and public buildings. Full compliance documentation and load test data are provided on completion.
Yes. Posts and handrails can be powder coated to any RAL colour. Matt Black and Anthracite Grey are the most popular choices for properties with aluminium windows or bi-fold doors, but we can match any colour specified.
Framed systems are generally more cost-effective than frameless because they use thinner glass and involve less complex installation. If you want the glass look without the full frameless price, a semi-frameless or post-and-rail system is an excellent alternative. Contact us for a free like-for-like quotation.
